THE PIG

in the wall

Welcome to our Southampton retreat

A little bit higgledy-piggledy and the smallest in our litter, THE PIG-in the wall is tucked within the old medieval walls of this south coast city centre, just 90 minutes from London.

We do things a little differently...

Our little city-centre bolthole, THE PIG-in the wall, is our only city PIG - and deliberately so. Twelve rooms tucked into Southampton's medieval walls, a deli bar serving food that travels twenty minutes from our Kitchen Garden in the New Forest, and a city on the doorstep that rewards exploring. It's not the full PIG experience - but for the right trip, it's exactly the right one.

The deli-bar

We don’t have a Kitchen Garden on site - but we're just as committed to what's on the plate. Daily deliveries from THE PIG in the New Forest and Hampshire, Dorset and Isle of Wight suppliers keep things fresh and seasonal. Deli salads, pies, quiches, Piggy Bits, sharing boards and something sweet - relaxed, seasonal and changing with what's available.

Staying with us? Breakfast is served every morning - help yourself to the grazing table, loaded with fresh juices, seasonal fruit, homemade compotes, pastries, granola and more. If you're ready for something warmer, the Piggy Pan is worth waking up for!

Pull up a chair, order something to share and take your time.

Fresh pours

Our bar is smaller than most PIGs - ours drinks menu is a tight, well-considered list of classic cocktails, local craft ales, ciders and spirits.

A good coffee when you need a PIG me up, a Margarita when you don't, a Negroni by the fire or something cold on the terrace.

Outdoor nibbles & tipples

When the sun is out make sure to drop in and make yourself comfy on our outdoor terrace. Tuck in to fresh, home-cooked plates of Piggy Bits, perfect for grazing over with great company – or simply sit back in the sunshine with a glass of something chilled.

Rooms worth coming back to.

Twelve rooms, each one different. Original beams, reclaimed materials, vintage finds and proper beds - the kind you sink into after a day in the city and don't particularly want to leave. Every room is its own small discovery.

Room Features

Our patch in the city.

Southampton has a habit of surprising people - a good food and drink scene, miles of medieval walls, waterfront walks and enough history to fill a long weekend. Here's how we'd spend it:

You're already sleeping in them. The medieval walls run through and around the city centre - walk them, follow the Bargate, find the Tudor House and Garden and the streets that have been here since Southampton was one of England's most important ports. The history is remarkable and largely unhurried by crowds.

Follow the water west from the walls and you'll find Mayflower Park - open green space right on the Solent with views across to the Isle of Wight. On a clear day the views are hard to beat. Keep walking and you reach the Western Docks, where the great liners leave from.

The Red Funnel ferry from Southampton's town quay gets you to Cowes in under an hour. The island rewards a day - good beaches, good cycling, the Needles if the weather plays ball and back in time for dinner. One of those trips that always feels more of an adventure than it has any right to.

Southampton's independent dining heartland - a partially pedestrianised street with a near-continental feel on a warm evening. The kind of street where the evening stretches out without you noticing.

The city's lesser-known foodie neighbourhood. Independent coffee shops, craft beer, a proper local feel. Come here if you want to eat well without the crowd

And when you need the countryside

The New Forest is twenty minutes away.

THE PIG in the New Forest is our original - a kitchen garden that started the whole philosophy, ancient woodland and Brockenhurst village on the doorstep. If you want a day of forest walks, a long lunch in the greenhouse or a kitchen garden tour, it's close enough to do and be back for supper.

Just don't feel like you have to - Southampton has plenty to offer on its own.
