24 hours in a Stream Wagon at THE PIG-at Combe

Nestled in the Otter Valley and just 15 minutes from the coast, our secluded Elizabethan Gem, THE PIG-at Combe, is tucked quietly amongst the rolling hills.

If you’re looking to get closer to nature, our five Stream Wagons are for the adventurous pair! These aren’t just your average Wagons – ours are a whole different ball game…

These up-levelled romantic retreats are better fitted out than most hotel bedrooms, whilst still stylishly designed using reclaimed timber with a double bed, an en-suite bathroom and your own terrace. Built by Plankbridge, our Stream Wagons are warm and cosy with wood burners to snuggle up in front of on your comfy sofa. Wait, that’s not all… both inside and outside you’ll find a double ended bath and monsoon shower!

Here’s a sneak peek of what 24 hours in a Stream Wagon may look like…

7am – Wake up to the sound of nature from the ‘babbling brook’, the River Gitt. Ease into a slow morning with a warm cup of coffee in your big sink-in bed or sit outside on your own little terrace and watch the world go by.

8am – Jump into your monsoon shower or embrace the great outdoors with a perfectly private shower in the fresh air to really greet the day – don’t forget to warm up in your cosy robe afterwards!

9am – Give THE PIG team a call and we’ll come and collect you in our Land Rover or take in your surroundings with a stroll up to the house for a big homegrown cooked breakfast, or our seriously moreish grazing table packed with locally sourced goodies.

11am – It’s time to explore! Join in our daily Kitchen Garden tour at 11am where our very own team will show you around our patch. Discover THE PIG’s plot to plate ethos with a peek into our polytunnels, greenhouses, veg patches and raised beds – and feel free to ask any questions you have along the way. Our gardeners love to dig deep and will talk all day long about what we’re growing, sowing and harvesting!

With more grounds to explore a little further along on our doorstep, take a visit to the 18th century National Trust property: Killerton House. As well as the gardens, there’s plenty to see inside this beautiful Georgian home, including a fashion exhibition on the first-floor, a Grade I listed chapel built in 1841, and a second-hand bookshop in the original stables.

12:30pm – Down tools – it’s time for lunch! Head to The Folly, our rustic chic hideaway in the gardens, where you’ll find our infamous wood-fired flatbreads with locally sourced and seasonal toppings… plus a few sweet treats to finish things off.

2pm –Fancy an adventure? One of our team’s favourite local gems, Golden Cap, is just a short drive away and will take you from countryside to the coast in under 40 minutes. This stunning coastline overlooks the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site with magnificent views at every compass point.

If you want to wander a little closer to home, we warmly recommend a visit to our good friends at Castlewood Vineyard for a vineyard tour and tasting of their homegrown still and sparkling English wines, on their south-facing Devon hillside overlooking the river Axe. Simply speak to us at reception, and we can book you a slot – they will be more than happy to open their cellar doors for you!

6.30pm – After all that exploring, you’ll have worked up a hearty appetite! Head down to our relaxed restaurant in the main house and dig into our 25 mile menu, packed full of autumn pickings, zero mile ingredients, locally sourced treats and heaps of flavour. If you’re in the mood for a tipple, our Wine Team are always happy to recommend perfect pairings with your dishes – and, if you fancy a peek, they’ll happily show you around our candlelit cellar, nested in the original wine vaults of our 16th century house!

8.30pm – Hop back in the Land Rover where we’ll take you back to your cosy Stream Wagon where it’s time to light the wood burner! Run yourself a hot bubble bath in the great outdoors and unwind under the stars with a glass in hand. Feeling peckish for a little post dinner treat? Have a rummage through the larder, packed full of local treats and old school goodies – plus a tipple or two to help make the most of your escape!

10.30pm – Snuggle down in your bed for the sweetest dreams, away from the hustle and bustle of the main house, right in the heart of the Devonshire countryside.
