In a nutshell, can you tell us the story of how House of Hackney came to be?
In 2011, House of Hackney was born around our kitchen table out of a desire to bring the beauty of the natural world into the home. With a typically tiny London back yard, we wanted to create indoor ‘living’ rooms inspired by the prints and palette of our design muse, Mother Nature. When we couldn’t find the interiors we were looking for, we decided to create our own!
Perhaps out of nostalgia for a time passed, we wanted to evoke the wallpapered bedrooms of our 1980’s childhoods. We wanted to empower people to rip up the decorating rule book, to be playful with their homes, and follow their heart to create spaces that truly made them happy.
We love how nature is the inspiration behind every one of your unique designs – how does nature weave its way into your business ethos, too?
From the start, we had a vision to create a different type of company than ones we had worked for; one of true integrity which valued its people and our planet, and one which was led by head and heart. The world didn’t need another interiors brand – we needed to create one that had true purpose.
As a business rooted in the beauty of the natural world, we believe it's imperative we hold ourselves to a high level of accountability for our own impact. That’s why, a year ago, we made the decision to legally appoint Mother Nature & Future Generations to our board of directors, so they have a voice and a vote in every decision we make.
How do you create luxury wallpapers and textiles that are sustainable?
Everything we make is designed with purpose and made to last. Our wallpapers are made from Forest Stewardship Council certified wood pulp and every item sold helps to support The World Land Trust, who work to protect ancient and endangered habitats. Plus, our wallpaper is made-to-order which ensures minimal waste.
We have an amazing team at House of Hackney who work closely with our suppliers to ensure regeneration and sustainability is always at the forefront of everything we do, so we’re creating with beauty and integrity.
Our Creative Director, Judy Hutson, imagines characters that might live in each PIG and designs each property around that character (and lots of House of Hackney features!). How you think your designs and ways of working complement THE PIG?
Nature is at the heart of both House of Hackney and THE PIG, so there’s an inherent connection there.
Both of us champion traditional craft and locality, which is a very clear message throughout THE PIG’s schemes. Our aesthetic at House of Hackney was heavily influenced by Britain’s heritage, so it was important to us to use local production – for authenticity, quality and to support local employment.
We both believe in buying less but buying better. When we first started House of Hackney, we spent 6 months travelling around the UK in our van, knocking on doors and chasing manufacturing leads. Across the country we were excited to find pockets of traditional manufacturing, where families passed down their craft through generations.
The factories we found back then are the same ones we work with today. And, as a team, we turn designs into beautifully crafted products that we call ‘future heirlooms’; pieces created with such skill and integrity that they stand the test of time. We know THE PIGs work in the same way, too.
We know it’s impossible to choose, but is there a specific House of Hackney print or design that has a special place in your hearts?
It is so hard to pick as they are all so special. PLANTASIA has a place in our hearts as it carries an important message/ It is a mural of a forest of trees and serves as a reminder that there is so much beauty and wonder all around us, and we need to protect that for future generations.
